Optician

Monson Eyecare Center, a growing private optometric practice, has an opportunity for a full-time optician. Typical responsibilities include assisting patients in selecting frames and lens options, adjustments, and repair of eyewear, as well as placing eyewear orders through various vendors online.

The ideal candidate has retail sales or customer service experience, has a working knowledge of computer systems, and has worked in a medical environment. ABO or CPO certification a plus. Optical experience is preferred but training is available for the right person. We offer a competitive benefit package and potential for both organizational and personal growth.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Interpreting optical prescriptions written by the Optometrist.
  • Giving advice to patients on lens type, frames and styling.
  • Taking frame and facial measurements to ensure correct fit and positioning.
  • Advising partially sighted patients on the use of low vision aids.
  • Advising patients when adjustments or repairs to spectacles are needed.
  • Advising patients on insurance coverages for eyecare and eyewear.
  • Adjusting eyeglasses to ensure a proper fit
  • Repairing broken frames
  • Educating clients on proper eyeglass and contact lens care Selecting, managing and ordering a range of optical products for sale, display, or repair use.
  • Ordering lenses from prescription labs.
  • Keeping track of orders, prescriptions, and inventory; Responsible for inventory costs and mix that allows for the most efficient turnover of inventory.
  • Checking lenses on delivery to ensure that they meet the required specifications
  • Arranging and maintaining optical department displays.
  • Liaising with sales representatives from vision care product suppliers.
  • Develop ideas for increasing sales through special offers, product placement, fliers, direct marketing, and staff development.
  • Supervision and training trainee dispensing opticians
  • Processes patient's information through the computer system and helps maintain the operation of the reception records and reception area.
  • Processes patient orders through appropriate insurance plans through office PMS and online through insurance company's program
  • Helps manage continuous patient flow by effectively communicating with team members.
  • Conducts inventory of supplies. Verifies and maintains stock levels and recommends disposal for all expired supply items.
  • Required knowledge, skills, abilities:
  • Effective team player, with very good interpersonal relationship skills and can work and relate well with co-workers, patients and customers.
  • Must have the behavioral sensitivity, maturity, diplomacy and tact in addressing complex situations and handling irate customers and patients.
  • Expected to be good at product sales.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong ethics and a high level of personal and professional integrity. Must have basic familiarity on federal and state laws and requirements related to healthcare management and patient privacy.
  • Computer literate and very highly proficient in using MS office systems.
  • Have a knowledge of medical insurance systems as they relate to deductibles, copays and differences between "vision" insurance and "medical" insurance.

License:

CPO or ABO: preferred but must willing to be certified with in 18 months of employment.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent plus one-year certificate from college or technical school.

  • 2 years of retail sales or customer service.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.


This position is in both our Owatonna and Waseca locations, and will require travel between both offices. Hours vary from 7:45 am to 7:00 pm Monday - Friday, no weekends or major holidays. Compensation is based upon training and experience.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $13.00 - $22.00 per hour
